Born in a freedom figthers’ family of the Midnapur District in West Bengal, Banishree is a talented musician and an expert in Khayal. She was for many years a disciple of Dr. Amiya Ranjan Banerjee, learned the Kandarvani style of dhrupad from late Pandit Udhay Bhusan Bhattacharya and had voice training from the Dagar Brothers. Banishree is particularly grateful to her last guru, late Pandit Vasant Thakar, who sparked her talents and widened her musical horizon. Apart many programs in India, she performed in Bangladesh, Belgium and France.
Banishree holds an MA in Music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. She received the title “Sur-Mani” at the Kel-ke-kalakar Sangeet Sammelan in Mumbai. Banishree’s singing is characterised by depth of emotion, amazing, verve, vitality and a high degree of tunefulness
Banishree is also an exponent of “Rabindrasangeet” as she had the privilege to learn these under the guidance of Smt Suchitra Mitra.
Banishree has always been fascinated by colours. Self-taught painter, she tries to capture her dreams in her works and lets us interpret them. Freshness, luminosity, love for nature and passion for perfection come out naturally from her paintings.
Banishree has published some of her experiences in a humoristic book entitled “Saheb Babur Boithakkhana”.
